Judge Donald Cole Byrd requested the formation of an Drug Court Alumni group to support and celebrate graduates coming out of the Program.  Graduates from the Proposition 36 Program were included in 2003.  Graduates through the present day have been presented with graduation and alumni membership certificates and encouraged to attend the local meetings of Narcotics Anonymous as well as participate in regular meetings of the Alumni.

Originally designated “The Glenn County Alumni of Drug Court and Proposition 36”, the group met for mutual encouragement and fun activities to celebrate their Clean and Sober lives.   They participated in local efforts for drug prevention education and worked with local substance abuse officials and counselors to promote events that highlighted and supported Glenn County efforts to encourage recovering addicts and drug prevention education .

In 2006 the group began using the tagline "Unity in Recovery" as an indication of their ongoing cooperation with each other as well as authorities, counselors and supporters.   New official ByLaws were drawn up to reflect a new mission.  Beginning in 2008, Unity in Recovery chose to include anyone who shared the same vision: to Support Clean and Sober Living in Glenn County, California.

One ongoing vision for the group has been to start Sober Living Environments (SLEs) in Glenn County.  These are residences where people who have come through treatment programs (whether in prison or self-committed) can begin to live "Life on Lifes Terms".   In this type of social modeling example, residents will begin to build their new lives with the support of people who will lovingly hold them up without enabling their addictions.

Clean and Sober Living for both Men and Women is a project which we are now assisting.   The Women's Unity House is able to house up to 6 residents who will commit to staying clean and hold each other up. It also accommodates children when possible.  Our Men's Unity House II is also now bursting at the seams and we are looking into working with Glenn County to find more housing space for Clean and Sober homes.   As an organization, Unity in Recovery helps provide support for these residents in the form of transportation, mentoring, companionship, sponsorship and help in many areas.
